Writing pages that answer engines will cite

Search used to reward the page that ranked. Answer engines reward the page that can be quoted. Those are not the same document.
A model assembling an answer needs a sentence it can lift without context. That means the first sentence under a heading has to be complete on its own — no “as mentioned above”, no pronoun pointing three paragraphs back.
Write the question the way a person types it
Headings phrased as real questions outperform clever ones. “What does a website cost?” beats “Investment” every time, because it matches the query rather than gesturing at it.
Answer first, elaborate second. The elaboration is for humans; the first sentence is for everything else.
Structure the machine can read
FAQPage schema on the pages that actually answer questions, not sitewide boilerplate.
Answers present in the DOM, not injected on click.
One canonical answer per question, linked to rather than duplicated across pages.
Google retired FAQ rich snippets for most sites in 2023, so the payoff here is retrieval and long-tail search, not stars in the results page. Still worth doing — just be clear about what you are buying.
